Status: planned, number 9 of 21 in BareProxy’s build order. The plugins are built easiest first, and this one is about a day of coding: tags added to the head of HTML pages. It comes after the Rate limiting and basic WAF plugin. This post describes what it will do, and it will be updated as it is built.

Paste a link into Slack, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, X or iMessage, and a fetcher comes to read the page’s Open Graph tags: a title, a description and an image for the preview card. A page without them shows up as a bare URL, or with whatever text the fetcher grabbed first, often a cookie notice. Plenty of pages lack them: old pages, app screens, documentation, files a CMS never touched.

BareProxy Redirects From a File Plugin: Thousands of Old URLs Moved Without Config Lines

Status: planned, number 4 of 21 in BareProxy’s build order. The plugins are built easiest first, and this one is about half a day of coding: one file read into a table, reloaded on a timer. It comes after the Header and rewrite rules plugin. This post describes what it will do, and it will be updated as it is built.

Every site migration leaves a trail of old URLs: a CMS that put dates in paths, a blog that moved from
/p/123
to
/posts/title
, a shop that renamed every category. Each old URL that still has links pointing at it needs a permanent redirect, or the links break and the search ranking that came with them is lost. A migration can easily mean ten thousand redirects.

BareProxy RenderCache Plugin: Prerendered Pages for Search Bots, AI Crawlers and Link Previews

Status: planned, number 21 of 21 in BareProxy’s build order. The plugins are built easiest first, and this one is about one to two weeks of coding: the plugin plus a headless browser beside BareProxy, and pages that must render right. It comes after the Image optimizer plugin. This post describes what it will do, and it will be updated as it is built.

A JavaScript app shows a browser a nearly empty HTML page and builds the rest in the browser. People never notice. Crawlers do. Google can render JavaScript, slowly and on its own schedule. Most AI crawlers don’t run it at all: they fetch the HTML, find a
<div id="root">
and a bundle of scripts, and move on. Link previews in chat apps and social networks do the same. For them, a single-page app is a blank page.
